The rural week
I would like you to forget looking at the watch, thanks to this 5-day-long itinerary with Be Rural. Because time will be marked by visits, talks, lunches, strolls in the country, caves and Hyblaean small towns (and across Southeastern Sicily). Sometimes we will have an early start to enjoy a real farmer’s breakfast, some other time we will have lunch on a picnic blanket among carob trees, or we will take a stroll with cows and sheep. We will meet farmers, growers, artisans: people who are proud of their history. Be Rural invites you to enjoy this experience.
DAY 1 - Ragusa Ibla
Exploring the Hyblaean hills
On your first day, depending on your arrival time, I would like you to settle in. We will take a path through the Hyblaean caves.
Walking and discovering
We will take a lunch stop under a carob tree, or olive tree, close to some dry stone walls (UNESCO World Heritage), lying down on a meadow. Nature will be with us, along with great food, a glass of wine and some farm-to-table, local produce I will provide.
For the evening, let me take care of it
We will choose together any of the diverse trails, tailored on you and depending on the weather, so if it is too hot, Be Rural will provide an alternative option. The day will continue with an interaction with artisans, a stroll around alleyways, historic building such as churches, as well as discovering new flavours paired with local wines, before dinner.
DAY 2 - Giarratana
The herbs of Mr Castello
I would like your first awakening to be special. I propose a traditional farmer’s breakfast at dawn. The choice is yours!
Later we will move to Giarratana, a small town that has kept its rural identity. Together we will go to visit one of my dearest friends, who is ax expert of native medicinal herbs and we will follow him to pick them, depending on the season.
Are you hungry?
Outdoor tastings
A taste of olive oil for your palate.
We will be welcomed by Salvatore who will present his production of DOP (a denomination of protected origin, a certification from the Hyblaean Hills) extra virgin olive oil and his more recent production of onion from Giarratana, a specific, sweet onion, recognised in the “Slow Food” global movement and rich of beneficial properties.
If you decide to visit in mid-August (“Ferragosto” in Italian), I will take you to the local onion festival, organised yearly to invite all local farms to show their onion-based product, and where you can dance, taste and have fun all night long.
Please note that to arrange these additional experiences, you must specify your request at the time of booking with Be Rural.
DAY 3 - Monterosso Almo / Frigintini
Our friends
We will start with tasting of local cheese from a local producer who will explain how he started and how hard the work in the country actually is.
A few steps away, we will get on our bike and will continue our morning with ancient grains along with exploration of traditional flavours.
There will be 2 sisters who will lead you to enjoy, along with me, then we will place a picnic blanket under an olive tree and we will share the delightful fares we prepared. Wheat flour, Sicilian ancient grain, fresh tomatoes and seasonal fruit. For any allergy, celiac disease, IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), I kindly ask you to inform me in advance.
In the afternoon, we will visit the the real protagonists in nature: our friend bees. Where? Not a strict program, we will find out depending on where the beekeepers are.
Then, dinner with local specialties, based on the season, in a rural place.
DAY 4
Trekking in nature in a surprise village
This day will be entirely focused on nature, so we will take a hike among the Hyblaean Hills and continue on a discovery of rural villages presented by our dear friend Sara, a tour guide.
If the weather is too hot during summer months, Be Rural will provide an alternative option to guarantee physical and mental well-being, as well as safety.
DAY 5 - Ispica / Modica
Today we will have an early start and we will visit some friends. Hiking clothing required, but it will be an easy path, oriented on history and culture.
Surprise lunch if it is your last day with me, otherwise you will still get it!
In the afternoon we will continue to Ispica/Modica, still to be decided depending on the temperatures. This also applies to our hike.
A day like a sheep - Giarratana / Frigintini
Breakfast while strolling with sheep, this rural experience may be subject to change, based on nature, farmers and our beloved sheep. We will have a snack with local cheese. About lunch, based on timing, we will decide to stay in Giarratana or go somewhere else.
This farm experience is a substitute for one of our other options. It may change depending on the season, the farmer’s schedule, and the sheep.
Please be aware that Mediterranean cuisine is varied. Therefore, if you have any allergies, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease, or intolerances, please inform us at the time of booking.
